Integrated Center for the Treatment of Obesity
Our main objective is to offer our patients a complete management program, in an agreeable atmosphere, which will allow them adequate weight loss and whith a lasting effect.
Obesity has been defined by the World Health Organization as the epidemic of the 21st Century. In our country, one out of four Chileans
is obese, all of which brings about greater complications, such as myocardial infarction, hypertension, high cholesterol and Type 2 diabetes mellitus, among others.
In Chile, according to data provided by the Ministry of Health in 2003, the presence of obesity among women constituted a 27,3%, whilst in men, it was in the rank of 19,2%. Among adults,1,3% of the population is considered as morbidly obese. Our Region is not absent from this reality, since we have the highest rate of obesity and morbid obesity in the country (27% and 4%, respectively), and the presence of obesity in six–year-old children is 28,3%, with a national average of 16.7%.
Bearing this reality in mind, a group of professionals, together with Clínica Magallanes, created in July of 2007, the Integrated Center for the Treatment of Obesity (ICTO). Its main objective is to provide all the alternative therapies that are at present available and which are accepted by the world medical community, in a case by case pattern and within the framework of a multidisciplinary team of professionals who are certified and qualified. From its beginnings, a majority of patients has been succesfully treated by changing their lifestyles, with nutritional therapy, physical activity, treatment of contiguous ailments and in special cases, with drug treatment in order to optimize results. In the case of obesity of a higher degree (severe or morbid), there is an amount of clinical studies worldwide that show the greater effectiveness of surgical treatment in comparison with nonsurgical treatment. Bariatric surgery – the name given to this procedure- has shown a significant and lasting reduction of excess weight and also in the other diseases associated with obesity, such as diabetes and hypertension.

The purchase, by the Clinic, of state of the art surgical instruments and laparoscopic equipment, plus the opening of an Intensive Care Unit, have permitted an enhanced surgical activity, offered within the highest standards of safety and quality.
